Over a Decade of Vision Care Across the WAGP Corridor

WAPCo remains steadfast in its commitment to uplifting communities along the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP), with a special focus on prioritizing health and well-being. For more than ten years, WAPCo has conducted free eye screening exercises for residents in Benin and three other WAGP countries—Ghana, Togo, and Nigeria. These screenings, led by qualified ophthalmologists, include specialized tests for glaucoma, cataracts, refractive errors, and other eye disorders.

Recent Eye Care Outreach in Benin

In July 2025, WAPCo organized another impactful health outreach program, this time in six host communities in Benin: Akadjame, Cococodji, Fandji-Seloli, Bazounkpa, Adjaxedji, and Akouehonou. During this initiative, a significant number of cases involving refractive errors, cataracts, and emerging glaucoma were identified, underscoring the ongoing need for accessible eye care in these regions.

Partnering for Health Solutions

Dr. Sohoude Euloge, an ophthalmologist from the Centre National Hospitalier Universitaire du Bénin (CNHU), emphasized the urgency of follow-up for many individuals, particularly those with critical refractive errors. In response, WAPCo distributed essential medicines, medical glasses, frames, and protective cases to community members who would not otherwise have access to such resources.

Community Appreciation

At handing-over ceremonies in Cococodji, Fandji-Seloli, and Akadjame, local leaders expressed heartfelt appreciation for WAPCo’s continued support. Michel Houssou, Chief of Bazounkpa, described the program as a “lifeline” for families unable to afford specialist eye care. “Without this periodic eye screening offered by the company, many people would have lost their eyesight for years,” he shared.

Continuing the Commitment

Irma Ebo, WAPCo’s External Relations Coordinator for Benin, explained that the eye screening initiative was developed in direct response to the pressing health needs of host communities. “Some of the diagnosed cases were quite serious and required referral to specialized centers. Without WAPCo, many would continue to suffer in silence,” she noted.

WAPCo is proud to continue this important initiative, with plans to extend free eye screenings to the remaining seven WAGP host communities in Benin in the coming days. Through partnerships, compassion, and sustained action, WAPCo is helping to ensure a brighter future for communities across the region.
