WAPCo Advances Regional Energy Integration at SAIPEC 2026
The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has reaffirmed its leadership in regional energy integration and Africa’s energy transition at the 10th Sub‑Saharan African International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (SAIPEC 2026).
WAPCo was represented by its General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Dr. Isaac Adjei Doku, who participated as a panelist on the high‑level strategic session titled “Gas as a Transition Fuel: Policies, Projects and Pipelines.” The session convened policymakers, operators, financiers, and development partners to examine how natural gas can support energy security, affordability, and decarbonization across Africa.
Drawing on WAPCo’s experience operating the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP) across Nigeria, Benin, Togo, and Ghana, Dr. Doku shared practical lessons on balancing commercial, regulatory, and political interests in cross‑border gas infrastructure. He emphasized the importance of deep stakeholder engagement, treaty‑backed and harmonised regulatory frameworks, and strong operational and safety performance in sustaining long‑term investor and stakeholder confidence.
The panel also explored pathways for strengthening regional cooperation, improving gas supply reliability, expanding pipeline and station capacities, and enabling new market interconnections to support power generation and industrial growth. Discussions highlighted the role of innovative commercial arrangements in reducing risk and attracting long‑term investment into regional gas markets.
WAPCo’s participation at SAIPEC 2026 reinforced the WAGP as a proven model of cross‑border energy collaboration, demonstrating how well‑coordinated infrastructure, sound governance, and regional partnerships can drive economic growth while supporting Africa’s transition to a more sustainable and diversified energy mix.
