WAPCo supports 70 brilliant students
WAPCo has announced the award of scholarships to seventy students from its seven host communities in Ghana. WAPCo’s Managing Director, Mrs. Michelle Burkett announced the award of the scholarships at a presentation ceremony in Shama, in the Western Region of Ghana to honour fifty of the awardees who hail from the Shama District.
Mrs. Burkett said the scholarships were WAPCo’s investment in the dreams and aspirations of the recipients and a recognition of their ability to contribute meaningfully to their communities, the nation and the world.
The total cost of these scholarships for the current academic year is 462,000 Ghana cedis. In addition to these new scholarships, WAPCo is also supporting about 120 continuing students in tertiary institutions across Ghana, with an additional expenditure of around 750,000 cedis this year.
This brings the total investment by WAPCo in the education of students from our seven host communities in Ghana for this academic year to a little over 1,200,000 cedis.
WAPCo has seven host communities in Ghana; five in the Shama District of the Western Region and two in the Greater Accra Region. In 2012, WAPCo in consultation with the local authorities introduced the Scholarship Awards for brilliant but needy students from these communities.
WAPCo’s General Manager Corporate Affairs, Dr. Isaac Adjei Doku, in his welcome address said this batch of awardees were the 10th batch and over the years, WAPCo had witnessed the remarkable journeys of many young individuals from the host communities, whose potential has been nurtured through WAPCo’s scholarship initiative. He cited the example of the 2022 best male graduating Law student of the University of Cape Coast, who is currently studying at the Ghana Law School.
During this 10-year period, WAPCo has supported 642 students from our seven host communities in Ghana. Out of this number, 356 were males and 286 females.
“I would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the families, teachers and the community leaders who have supported these students. It is often said that when you see a turtle on top of a post, it didn’t get there by itself. Someone placed it there. Your support has played a crucial role in the success of these exceptional students,” Dr Doku said.
The District Chief Executive for Shama District Assembly, Hon. Ebenezer Dadzie was grateful to WAPCo for the continued support for the youth in the community over the years. He advised the students not to take this support for granted, always remember where they come from, focus on their studies and be of good behaviour.
The chiefs and other speakers at the ceremony thanked WAPCo for the support and appealed for more support.
