The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) in its mission to strengthen energy security across the sub-region.

During a meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, August 12, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, received WAPCo’s outgoing Managing Director, Michelle Burkett, and incoming Managing Director, Abiodun Bodunrin.

Minister Ekpo praised Michelle Burkett for her visionary leadership and tireless efforts in driving WAPCo’s growth, noting the significant milestones achieved under her tenure.

Pledging the Federal Government’s full backing for Abiodun Bodunrin, the Minister encouraged him to build on past achievements while enhancing WAPCo’s operational performance.

As Chairman of the Committee of Ministers of the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP), Minister Ekpo emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to ensuring a steady supply of gas to Benin, Togo, and Ghana—an effort he described as critical to reducing energy poverty and fostering economic growth.

He further highlighted the Tinubu-led administration’s strides in advancing gas infrastructure, cutting gas flaring, and boosting gas availability for both domestic use and export.

In his remarks, WAPCo’s new MD, Abiodun Bodunrin, expressed appreciation for the government’s support and stated his vision to enhance WAPCo’s performance. He emphasized the importance of a reliable and uninterrupted gas supply from Nigeria for onward distribution to regional consumers.
