WAPCo committed to developing its host comunities

WAPCo has again demonstrated its commitment to the sustainable development of the communities in which it operates by donating a fully-equipped health centre to the Ajido community in Badagry, Lagos State. "The completion of this project is a testament of our commitment to developing our host communities", the MD Walter Perez stated in a letter addressed to the Executive Governor of Lagos State.

The US$ 218,000 facility is designed to ensure provision of the full range of primary health care for the community and its environs. It is one of many such health-related projects delivered by the company in all the countries in which it operates.
Health is one of four key areas of intervention identified with host communities through a participatory needs assessment. The other areas are water and sanitation, education and income generation.

WAPCo investments in Lagos and Ogun States

Over the years, WAPCo has made substantial investments in brick and mortar projects and other value-adding initiatives in its host communities in Nigeria. The company has so far invested over one million US dollars in brick and mortar projects -- including this Community Health Centre -- within Lagos and Ogun States.
It has also spent a total of nine hundred and thirty eight thousand US dollars (US$ 938,000) thus far, on providing tertiary education for 345 candidates, and vocational training for 297 people, all from host communities in the two States.
At a ceremony recently organised by WAPCo to officially hand over the facility, His Royal Majesty, the Aholu of Ajido Kingdom conveyed the heartfelt appreciation of the Ajido community for the project. "I wish to place on record, the unlimited appreciation of the Ajido community for the commissioning and handover of the Ajido Health Centre",he stated.
Special adviser to the Executive Governor of Lagos State on Primary Health Care, Dr Olufemi Onanuga, speaking on behalf of the Executive Governor, also expressed gratitude to WAPCo for the facility provided. For him,WAPCo is "a very good example" of what a company should be all about. "A company should not be just about making profit, but improving the circumstances of the communities in which it operates", he said.
The fully equipped primary healthcare facility will help enhance health delivery by bringing health care to the doorsteps of the community. This will in turn contribute to the reduction of the incidence of preventable deaths.
